  • I plan to stick with Dreamweaver for now. One big drawback is that I didn't see a tight integration between Expressions Web and a design-specific program ala the relationship between Dreamweaver and Fireworks. You could probably use it to mock up Joomla templates. My impression is that Expression Web makes sense if you're pursuing other development using Microsoft products and technologies.

Dig around for this if you'd like to try it out.įrom what I understand, the Microsoft Expression line of products will run on Windows XP with Service Pack 2, but all of these products definitely prefer Vista.

I believe that a free 30-day trial version of Expression Web can be downloaded from the MS Web site. Expressions Web does appear to have very good support for CSS and CSS-based Web layouts, something on par with Dreamweaver.

Both of these are handy, yes, but nothing to set the world on fire. Another touted feature was the ability to visually adjust the margins and padding values of tag areas. I found it telling that one of the main "features" of Expression Web touted by presenters was the DOCTYPE picker wizard. But there seemed to be some direct links to other MS dev tools, including the upcoming Expressions Blend, and XAML, which is Microsoft's new cross-product development language. This is definitely a product which prefers working with other Microsoft server-side technologies - PHP is apparently not supported. The way that Expression Web was presented, it was almost like it was for VB developers who had grown tired of having to deal with FrontPage. I also understand that the AJAX tool supports browser differences by executing different chunks of Javascript.Ģ) Tight hooks into other MS development products. Based on a developer question at the event, it sounds like they're still working out some of the kinks in the AJAX widgets.

MS has written a bunch of Javascript widgets that provide "Web 2.0" functionality that can be easily dropped into Expressions Web pages - stuff like viewing the next photo in a series without refreshing the page. The primary things that Expressions Web has that Dreamweaver does not seems to be:ġ) An integrated AJAX deployment environment. It sounded like a number of the developers for the Expression line of products are former Macromedia employees who had been hired away by Microsoft. The primary Expression Web interface is a near emulation of the Dreamweaver interface - it looks and acts just about the same.

This looks to be a much, much better tool than FrontPage, but that is faint praise indeed. I went to the Microsoft Expressions launch event in Chicago last month, and saw a preview of Expression Web, which was the only MS Expression product that is out of beta.
